Primary Presentation 2012

We just had our Primary Presentation for Sacrament Meeting yesterday.
The kids have worked so hard all year to learn and love the songs
and it showed, they sang with confidence and with heart.

We had three special musical additions to our program
The first addition was myself, along with the Shumway girls sang
I Have Faith (in the Lord Jesus Christ) as the sunbeams came up to the stand. 

Then the CTR 7 class (the ones who are at the age of baptism this year,
sang the first and second verse of
When I am Baptized with the whole primary coming in on the chorus.

Then we finished the program with the hymn Choose the Right
The primary sang the first verse,
Sister Cox (age 9) played a descant I wrote for her on the organ
for the second verse and the primary came in on the chorus,
then the congregation joined for the third verse.

The kids did such a good job, it was so fun to pass out the
 Olympic Singing Medals I made for them during singing time.

I love teaching primary music, it is the best calling ever.

DIY CTR Medals

In singing time I went with the olympic theme

for reviewing songs for the Primary Program in two weeks. 

I made my own CTR Medals

to give to the kids after the Chapel Practice on the 15th.

This is how I did it.

Supplies: Air Dry Clay, Pint Jar Ring,

Alphabet Stone Stamps, Award Plaque, Gold Spray Paint.

Step 1. Roll out the clay to an 1/8 inch thickness

Step 2.  Punch out disks with the Pint Jar Ring

Step 3.  Use plaque to press leaf impression on outside of ring

Step 4: Stamp CTR in the center if the disk

Step 5:  Insert Split Ring half way into clay

Step 6: Let dry overnight, turn over and dry the backside all day.

(If the split rings are loose, secure with elmers glue and allow to dry for 1 hour.)

Step 7:  Lay all the dry disks on paper (I used an old wrapping paper roll)

Step 8: Spray with gold spray paint (in a well ventilated area)

Let dry for 1 hour, turn disks over and repeat on the back side.

Step 9: When dry, thread ribbon (cut in 1 yard length) through the split ring.

Finished CTR Medals.

I can't wait to give these to the kids,

they have worked so hard and the songs sound great.

I hope it will be a good surprise for them.

The Primary Olympics

Did you get into the Olympic Spirit this summer?
I sure did and wanted to bring it into Singing Time
So I came up with a new group event called

Olympic Singing

This is how it works.

Choose three judges (I chose adults who are not usually seen in primary)
Give the judges three score cards and the rules for a perfect score. 

To get three smiley faces everyone must:
1. Sing with their best voices
2. Stand still (not bother their neighbor or wave their arms around etc)
3. Follow me (the song leader).

Sing the song then the judges will give the score, if the primary gets 3 smiley faces we get to sing a primary anthem (wiggle song) for Jr. Primary & (song of choice) for Sr. Primary.  They must sing the song until they get 3 smiley faces to move onto the next song.  I used songs will be singing for the Primary Program but any primary song you are working on will do.

Olympic Singing
What Comes Next?
I wanted to test how well the children knew the words to the songs in this event.

I used two different methods one for Jr. Primary and one for Sr. Primary

I make flip chart/posters to teach the children during the year.
For Jr. Primary display the posters in order on the board or the floor.
Then choose a child to come up and hold the sword of righteousness (made from cardboard)
The children sing and the pianist will stop playing when she pleases. 
The child must point the sword to the next picture or word. 
Continue singing until the end of the song, repeating the game. 
When they reach the end of the song choose a wiggle song to sing for a reward.

For Sr. Primary play Girls vs Boys.  Choose one girl and one boy to hold a fly swatter each.  Sing the song, when the music stops, have them swat the fly/moth with the next word on it.  Keep a tally for the Girl & Boy wins.  Have them hand off the fly swatters to the next players.  Play the game for 7 minutes.  At the  end of 7 minutes the group with the most tally marks chooses a favorite song.  If it is a tie (as is was in our primary) the music leader chooses the song.

Who is someone you look up to?

We can look up to Noah as an example.

He was not afraid to share the gospel and to follow what the Lord would have him do. 

Noah was courageous.

We will try our best and pray to Heavenly Father for help and strength.

How can we be prepared?

We can set a standard for ourselves!

Draw on the board a large cloud and above it write (clouds of adversity)

and then Draw an ark on the board under the cloud and write (HOPE) in the middle of the ark.

Sing:

I will follow the prophet, for he speaks in God's name.

I'll prepare every needful thing,

I will walk in righteous ways

When the rain starts to fall on me

I'll be ready for that day.

ask children to come up and draw or write things that will go in the cloud or the ark

examples:

Cloud - Lying, illness, bully at school, sad, lonely, stealing, don't keep the commandments, difficulty finishing project or homework, missing someone, jealousy

Ark- Prophet, take sacrament, attend church, keep commandments, scripture study, prayer, fasting, pay tithing, keep you mind and body clean and pure. be obedient, focus on important things, wear modest clothing, keep word of wisdom, be kind to others, serve one another, food storage, education, exercize, be a missionary.

Sing:

I can be like Noah, Yes, I can be prepared

I can build my ark, and I'll find safe shelter there.

I can learn and pray with all my might

President Thomas S. Monson gave a talk during the Priesthood Session of the Oct. 2011 General Conference entitled Dare To Stand Alone. 

He said, "When the time for decision arrives, the time for preparation is past."

He also tells the story of when he joined the Navy and was in boot camp that he was sure was trying to kill him.  The officer in charge told all the men the first Sunday that they were to go to church.  So he started to dismiss the men by groups.  The Catholics, Jews and Protestants were all given orders to gather in their designated places and don't come back until three o'clock.  President Monson said to himself, "Monson you are not a Catholic, a Jew or a Protestant, you are a Mormon so you just stand there."    When the officer asked who were the men still standing there, in chorus they said, "Mormons." and the officer ordered them to find a place to meet and don't come back until three o'clock.  President Monson remembered a poem that he had learned in primary.

Noah was courageous to stand alone in his convictions and warn the people he loved so much.  Although they used their agency and chose not to believe Noah.  Noah dared to stand alone and we can to.

Practice singing the third verse

Get 8 volunteers

Use Nephi & Laman and Lemuel  Image to cut out and glue a stick on the back

 and the pictures from the Friend

Call 8 Volunteers to hold the pictures (one each) in the front of the room.

Have the children sing with courage

if the picture is something Nephi would do.

Hold  the Nephi Prop above their head

Have the children sing like murmuring

if the picture is something Laman and Lamuel would do. 

Hold  the Laman and Lemuel Prop above their head.

Just as Nephi trusted in his earthly father Lehi,

you need to trust your mother and father

and follow their guidance as they fallow the savior.

When Nephi was commanded to build a boat, he needed a lot of help. 

When we are asked to do hard things,

we can go to our Heavenly Father in prayer and

he will help us to do what he has asked of us.

Just like Nephi couldn’t build his ship all alone,

we need to surround ourselves with good friends

and rely on our family to help us in our hard times.

One of the best things we can do to be like Nephi is to be obedient! 

When he found out what the Lord wanted him to do

He Did It!

We can’t be like Nephi unless we know what he did! 

We need to study our scriptures and learn from the prophets of old,

 the Book of Mormon is one of our greatest tools.
